A letter to Lucy on Her Third Birthday

My dear sweet Lucy on her third birthday,

Today you are three. I’m at a loss as to how that happened so quickly. I look down at you’re freshly born baby brother and think to myself it was only a blink ago that you were this small. I have to wonder... did I soak it in enough? Did I sear those moments into my memory so I’ll never forget? Was I present enough? Have I been enough for you? It all happened so slow, painfully slow at times, but so fast at the same time, and here we are, three years of loving you. Sweet, wonderful, joyful you.

Three years ago on the first day of spring you made me a mama. I’m so thankful you chose me. And although I don’t think I was quite ready for the journey ahead of me, we grew and learned together. In fact, we are still growing, still learning. Especially with the recent addition of your baby brother. It’s been such a big change for all of us. I think you’ve been hit the hardest. It hasn’t been easy sharing me, I know. There have been lots of big emotions all around, and I know I haven’t been perfect at handling it, sometimes expecting more of you than I should. You seem so much older now with a baby around but I’m continuing to remind myself that you’re only three. But I know we’ll figure this out soon.. we always do, you and I. And man oh man do you ever love that little brother of yours. You’re always giving him loads of hugs and kisses, helping me with diaper changes, and cuddling and holding him. When he cries you hold his hand and say “I know Milo, I know.” The little mother in you is the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.

You’ve definitely kept us on our toes this past year. You’re growing into such a sweet, kind, caring little girl. You make us laugh every day. You’re becoming so independent and strong willed, pushing the limits and our buttons daily. Which is exactly what you need to be doing sweet girl. Keep pushing the limits for the rest of your life. Be a force.
